Is a medical system that has been used effectively for several thousand years. The placement of acupuncture needles (very fine, hair-like, sterile needles) at specific anatomic locations on the surface of the body causes effects at the site of needle insertion as well as more wide ranging physiologic effects. The effects are thought to be caused by the manipulation of the flow of energy or Qi along the meridians (pathways) of the body. From a western biomedical point of view, acupuncture points are located in areas of high concentration of blood vessels and nerves. Stimulation of these areas with a needle causes the release of chemicals which effect acute and chronic pain, as well as feedback to the spinal cord to affect internal organ function. Acupuncture is very effective in treating musculoskeletal / neurologic problems as well as augmenting therapy for a variety of internal medicine problems including allergies, gastrointestinal disease and cancer.
Dr. Keith has extensive training in using Chinese and Western herbs in animals. Herbs are any part of a plant which can be used for medicine. They are often used in combination to improve their effectiveness as well as to address the different layers of disease present. They can be prescribed allopathically to address symptoms like a drug or antibiotic but they are most effective when prescribed to address the pattern of disease or imbalance in an individual patient. Dr. Keith will use herbs to encourage the bodies’ natural healing abilities. The art of prescribing the right herb or combination of herbs for an individual, takes years of practice but can be profoundly effective.
Judicious supplementation can be very helpful in supporting animals on their journey toward health. Dr. Keith tries to keep it simple and generally adheres to a less is more philosophy. However, appropriate supplementation with nutritional products can help fill gaps in a patient’s diet, strengthen inherent weaknesses, support a compromised immune system and help in the background to keep a patient healthy.
Is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is a very simple, yet powerful technique. By definition, Rei – spirit and Ki- energy- is spiritually guided life energy. Healing energy is pervasive and has been used by different cultures and traditions for thousands of years. People who specifically use Reiki are attuned to the energy and then become a channel for this energy. Dr. Keith has received Reiki attunement and finds this to be a wonderful modality to incorporate into the regimen for his patients. Reiki has proven helpful for behavioral issues, trauma, recovering from illness and can be profoundly beneficial for helping animals transition at the end of life.
By definition, homeopathy is a system of medical practice that treats a disease by the administration of minute (very, very small) doses of a remedy that would in larger amounts produce in healthy people symptoms similar to those of the disease. Homeopathic remedies are both safe and effective. Dr. Keith prescribes homeopathic remedies to treat acute and chronic presentations of disease, including the treatment of cancer.
Chiropractic focuses on maintaining and protecting the health and strength of the neuro-musculo-skeletal system. The brain and nerves control everything that happens in an animal’s body. Anything that interferes with the smooth function of the nervous system will have effects that resonate throughout the entire body. The command centers of the nervous system are the brain and spinal cord, housed and protected by the spine. The spine is a complex framework of bones, ligaments, muscles, and nerves. If the movement and biomechanics of the spine become dysfunctional, they can interfere with the performance of the nerves that branch off the spinal cord and go to all muscles and organs. As this occurs, your animal can lose normal mobility resulting in stiffness, tension, pain, and disease.
Chiropractors assess the movement and function of all joints of the body with a special focus on the joints of the spine. Care is provided by via adjustments; appropriate touches and movements in the right place at the right time to restore ease, release tension, and improve mobility. The nervous system can work with less interference. With a healthy nervous system, an animal is able to live with the best quality available at their stage of life.
